Educational Background:

Dr. Michael Taylor is a specialist in optical remote sensing measurements of atmospheric optical emissions. He has received grants from the NSF to design and build several high-performance imaging systems utilizing the airglow emissions to investigate upper atmospheric dynamics and temperature structure. He has used these instruments to study a broad range of atmospheric phenomena including gravity waves, tides, polar mesospheric clouds, equatorial and mid-latitude F region dynamics, upper atmosphere lightning and meteors. His group is actively involved in collaborative lidar, radar imaging and temperature mapping programs at low, mid-latitudes and most recently at polar latitudes at ALOMAR Arctic Lidar observatory, Norway and at South Pole, Antarctica. He is closely involved in the development of an international Antarctic Gravity Wave Imaging Network (ANGWIN) with new IR OH imagers now in place at several key locations around the Antarctic continent. He is a Co-Investigator on the NASA Aeronomy of Ice in the Mesosphere (AIM) mission designed to study polar mesospheric clouds (NASA Group Achievement Award 2008). As Director of Bear Lake Observatory (BLO) he has actively pursued the re-location of the CSU Na wind-temperature lidar now operational at USU campus. Graduate and undergraduate students are involved in all aspects of these research programs which have resulted in 5 Ph.D’s, 6 M.Sc’s and over 135 collaborative publications to date. He is an active researcher in the CEDAR community and has served on the Science Steering Committee (1996-99), the NSF Radar Review Panel (2003), and is currently Vice Chair of COSPAR Scientific Commission C.
